YOKE (with Tomoko) is a collaborative performance by Myriam Van Imschoot, Marcus Bergner and Tomoko Hojo, developed during a week-long residency at GalleryGallery in Brunswick, Melbourne.
Bringing together sound poetry, performance and shadow art, the work transforms the performance space into a place of collective observation and listening. Reflecting on the phrase lux lucet in tenebris — “light shines in shadow” — the performance explores the presence and influence of shadows, both physical and metaphorical, and the force of the voice in its inner, subjective and social manifestations.
The work is based on Van Imschoot and Bergner’s performance YOKE, which premiered in Belgrade in 2021 after a residency at MAGACIN, an independent art and cultural centre grounded in open access, autonomy, social solidarity and diversity. YOKE (with Tomoko) brings this project into a new context at GalleryGallery, creating a bridge between two independent art spaces at different ends of the globe.
YOKE (with Tomoko) は、Myriam Van Imschoot、Marcus Bergner、北條知子によるコラボレーション・パフォーマンスである。本作は、オーストラリア・メルボルンのブランズウィックにある GalleryGallery での1週間のレジデンスを通して制作された。
本作は、サウンド・ポエトリー、パフォーマンス、影絵／シャドウ・アートを組み合わせ、パフォーマンス空間を集合的な観察と聴取の場へと変容させる。古い言葉 lux lucet in tenebris ——「光は闇のなかで輝く」—— を手がかりに、物理的かつ比喩的な存在としての影、そして内面的／主観的なものから社会的／外的なものまで、さまざまなかたちで現れる声の力を探る。
本作は、Van Imschoot と Bergner によるパフォーマンス YOKE をもとにしている。YOKE は、2021年にベオグラードのアート＆カルチャーセンター MAGACIN でのレジデンスを経て初演された作品であり、今回の YOKE (with Tomoko) では、GalleryGallery という新たな文脈の中で再構成された。オープンアクセス、自律性、コミュニティの連帯、多様性を重視する二つの独立したアートスペースをつなぐ、交換と相互関係の場として展開された。
